Where is the 1st generation of iOLAP Academy today?

iOLAP Academy is a summer program designed for tech enthusiasts hungry for experience, to build their knowledge and try it out in real life. Our program is structured as a mix of lectures, mentoring sessions, home assignments, and a final hands-on team project. We offer you an opportunity to learn from and with the best, try out your skills, gain irreplaceable experience and start your IT career!

Now, you can get a better feeling of where our iOLAP Academy participants of the 1st generation are today and what they would suggest the future participants to get the most out of this program.

What are you doing today?

Jasmina Diković, Associate Data Engineer

I’m a member of Data & Analytics service line, currently engaged in a project for a global robotics company. This is a large project with more than 40 team members from iOLAP, and I’m a part of the Pipeline team. Product data is sent to the cloud. Millions and billions of records are reliably received, processed and prepared for end users who will turn it into improved customer service, engineer better products, and identify new services.

In a nutshell, my main focus as an Associate Data Engineer is to create, maintain, develop and support solutions and resources to operate large amounts of data. As part of this team, I also have the opportunity to participate in internal company projects, which allows me to keep developing different skills through the tasks I work on.

Erik Cetina, Associate Data Engineer

Right now, I’m working as a Data Engineer for a US pharmaceutical company. Our tasks consist of building integrations whose main goal is to send data from one source to another target. Each of these integrations is very different and each requires different resources and conditions. For example, in one project you're working on translating the code from PL/SQL to IICS, and in the other you're combining IICS and AWS to build end to end integrations from one web application to a second web application. All in all, very interesting projects with very interesting people!

Daniel Bonasin, Associate Data Engineer

Right now I'm a Junior Data Engineer.  I'm working daily with databases, ingestion, and transformations of the data. The team is great, we always try to help each other.

How has the iOLAP Academy helped you in your journey?

Jasmina: Beside the fact my iOLAP journey began after completing the D&A Academy track, the Academy itself gave me a detailed insight and strengthened my skills in several areas and resources which I started using daily after joining the team. It helped me become more familiar with cloud concepts for data engineering, but also practice (or learn completely new) Python, SQL and AWS skills relevant for the field. Also, most of the Academy mentors later became my colleagues – it was great to already feel like a part of the team from the very beginning.

Erik: The iOLAP Academy helped me by giving me a great insight into how big companies actually work. I learned about a lot of new cutting-edge technologies and how to use them in real life problems. I met a lot of smart and ambitious young people, and with some I became a great friend and colleague. It’s a perfect way to start your career journey.

Daniel: iOLAP Academy helped me meet my future colleagues and get a better experience of working in a firm. It was a nice introduction to Data Engineering and it made the transition from university to work environment a lot smoother.

What would you suggest to future participants?

Jasmina: The Academy is a great learning polygon and a chance to gain useful experience with data skills. Dare to try, dare to fail too, be open to this learning process and discover your strengths through hands-on experience. Bring your curiosity with you and use this time to explore the topics you will hear about and learn as much as you can.

Erik: I would suggest to all future participants not to hesitate but to apply now! You will learn a lot in one relaxed and comfortable environment. It’s never a bad time to learn new things!

Daniel: Listen to your mentors. Try to ask as much as possible, you'll quickly learn that there is no shame in not knowing something. It's a bigger shame not to learn it when you had the opportunity. And most importantly, work as a team and help each other out.
